Sizes of sea containers
Material which is applied to production of containers, ensures high quality and safety of transportations irrespective of range and features of a route. The principal advantages of containers are:
- resistance to extremal weight loadings;
- protection of a load against humidity, precipitates, damages;
- existence of the additional fixing elements.
To raise the security level, construction of the container provides existence of the special fixing mechanism - a tvistlok. It allows to connect among themselves and to set at each other over ten units.
Standardization of the transport equipment
The transport logistics causes need of standardization of the equipment which is used in shipping. Initially the standard parameters used in the territory of the USA were a standard. But they were unacceptable for Europe where road and transport conditions cardinally differed.
As a result of continuous negotiations with the World Standardization organization the uniform standard - ISO - 830 1981 which became a reference point for the companies specializing on shipping was developed and approved.
Classification according to the international standards
Standardization provides the following varieties of containers which height makes 2.59 m or 8 foots 6 inches:
- DV - Dry Van;
- DC - Dry Container;
- HC - High-Cube;
- HQ - High-Quantity.
This segment is designated often as follows: container 40 ′ DV/20 ′ DC. Products with height of 9 foots 6 inches (an equivalent of 2.9 m) are marked by the following method:
- HC (High-Cube);
- HQ (High-Quantity).
It is possible to give marking as an example: container 40 ′ NANOSECOND or 20 ′ NANOSECOND. Demanded and widespread models 20 and 40 foots long/8 foots wide are the most comfortable. For their designation special abbreviations are used:
- TEU-20-foot equivalent;
- FEU - a 40-foot equivalent.
Abbreviations serve as an index of fullness of cargo sea vessels, are used in case of calculations in cargo handling terminals.
Except popular options containers with designation of PW which is decrypted as Pallet Wide Container are sometimes used: shipping containers with the increased width (to 2.44 meters). Similar overall dimensions allow to place inside in one row two underpans 1.2 m wide. Taking into account features of construction in addition distinguish:
- OT - model with the tarpaulin opening roof;
- NT - model with the opening metal roof.
The sizes of the standardized containers allow to involve for transportation not only sea, but also motor, railway transport. It considerably reduces delivery period of loads, allows to optimize expenditures of clients of transport companies.
Operational parameters
Weight of products can vary because of materials and design features, however the operating standard provides the following values on weight:
- the 20-foot container - 2.3 t;
- the 40-foot container - 3.9 t.
In a usage time lump, including the trailer usually is calculated. For the organization of transportations key value has a loading index:
- the 20-foot container - about 21.7 tons on 33 m ³;
- the 40-foot container - about 26.5 tons on 76.6 m ³.
Some types of loads require observance of special conditions during transportation. For similar cases specialized options can be used:
- the models equipped with refrigerators;
- containers tanks;
- equipment for animals;
- module containers.
Variety helps to organize suitable conditions and to reduce delivery periods, to ensure safety of loads, to exclude damage.
Assignment of transport containers
20, 40, it is expedient to involve 45-foot options in transportation of the loads recorded on pallets, and boxes. For more dimensional and heavy subjects use the reinforced containers which have the raised strength indices.
Recently the 45-pound container 13.72 m long acquired popularity. It is compatible to the cargo motor transport, and can provide more space. Thanks to such parameters this type of the equipment became the main competitor of the European semi-trailers.
